- These laparoscopy sponges feature a permanently fused barcode
- Each barcode is easily read by a SurgiCounter, sold separately, despite the presence of blood or other body fluids
- Plus, each barcode represents an individually unique code assigned to that specific Safety-Sponge and no other, even of the same type
- When used with the SurgiCounter, the sponge system helps prevent any 1 Safety-Sponge from being inadvertently counted "IN" or "OUT" more than once
- The system can tell the surgical staff not only if one or more Safety-Sponges is missing, but also exactly which individual Safety-Sponges are still unaccounted for
