The BASA, Boston Assessment of Severe Aphasia is designed for clinicians to given to individuals post-stroke after the onset of symptoms, preferably at the person's bedside. The BASA probes the spared language abilities of persons with severe aphasia and provides diagnostic information needed for immediate treatment. Both gestural and verbal responses to the items are scored, and refusals, effective responses, and perseverance responses also are recorded. Scores can be expressed fully or partially communicative.
