For patients with severe wounds, such as postoperative wounds, ulcers, trauma wounds, and grafts, an alginate dressing may be appropriate. Alginate dressings contain fibers derived from seaweed, which contribute to healing by absoring up to 20 times their own weight. DermaGinate Ag Alginate Wound Dressing is a sheet or rope dressing often used to pack wounds to absorb fluids and encourage healing.
When applied to a wound, this Silver Alginate Wound Dressing absorbs fluid and becomes gel-like. This moist environment protects the wound and lowers the risk of infection by restraining the growth of baceria. The added silver helps control odor and protect the wound from microbial contamination.
To use, clean the wound area using a saline solution. Pat dry, then place DermaGinate Ag Alginate Wound Dressing over the wound. A secondary dressing may be used to hold the dressing in place. Replace the dressing when fluid begins to seep from the edges, usually after one to three days. To avoid skin damage, dampen the dressing with saline before removing.
